CNAME and MX Records
CNAME Records
For those who don’t know, a CNAME records is basically an alias or nickname for another resource which can even be outside of your existing domain.
An example of using CNAME records would be to add records to customize your Google Apps URLs such as make mail.yourdomain.com another name for the Google Apps provided address.
Creating a CNAME
Creating a custom CNAME record is very easy and is very useful especially for integrating Google Apps or other third-party solutions into your website, however it requires the use of an add-on domain or parked domain.
Creating a CNAME record is simple, just:
- Login to your website control panel
- Click on CNAME Records
- Under SOURCE type the name for the record, like if you’re using Google Apps Pages, type pages
- In the drop-down for domain, select your domain you’re adding the record on
- Under DESTINATION, fill in the address that the CNAME is to point to, for instance the address you have from Google Apps for the Pages service
- Click on Add
You should now be able to type your CNAME as you would a sub-domain and be taken to the destination you provided.
To remove a CNAME record:
Removing a custom CNAME record is also quite simple, simply:
- Login to your website control panel
- Click on CNAME Records
- To the far right of the record you wish to remove, click Delete
MX Records
A MX Record is a Mail eXchange record which tells servers and other clients how e-mail should be routed and to where.
You can customize these records if you have a domain and if you wish to use a third-party e-mail solution such as Google Apps for your e-mail service while using your own domain.
Adding Custom MX Records
Customizing your MX records for your domains is actually quite easy to do and allows you to find more appropriate solutions for your e-mail hosting.
To add custom MX records simply:
- Login to your website control panel
- Click on MX Records
- Take note of the existing MX records for the site you wish to customize, perhaps copy the text and save it somewhere in the event you have to switch back
- Click Delete next to all existing records for the domain you wish to change
- In the domain drop-down, select the domain you’re customizing records on
- In the text box to the right, paste in the full text as provided by your third-party mail provider
- In the preference box, type in the priority number for that particular record as provided by your mail provider
- Click on Add
- Repeat as necessary according to your e-mail provider’s instructions
After you’ve done all of the records, all e-mail sent to that domain should now be routed to your chosen provider’s servers.
Removing Custom MX Records
If you are switching e-mail providers or you wish to revert to the default MX records for your domain, you must remove the custom records you set in place and replace them either with the default one you saved on your computer or with new ones provided by another e-mail provider.
To remove MX records:
- Login to your website control panel
- Click on MX Records
- Take note of the existing MX record for the site you wish to customize, perhaps copying the text and saving it on your computer in the event you have to switch back
- Click Delete next to all records for the domain you wish to modify
After you’ve done this, you should set in place the new records or the original MX records for your domain (provided you saved it on your computer) and now all mail will be routed either to the new provider if you switched or back to our service if you’ve gone back to the default records.

Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, AOL and MobileMe: all this is nice, of course, and of very little use when you have a Windows Live Hotmail account and want to access it in iPhone Mail.
Fortunately, a smart service can turn any Windows Live Hotmail or MSN Hotmail account into a POP or IMAP account that looks regular and accessible to any email program — including iPhone Mail. With IzyMail, you can access Windows Live Hotmail transparently and see your custom folders, too.
If you prefer not to hand your log-in credentials over to IzyMail, you can also set up free Windows Live Hotmail as a POP account and download incoming messages as well as send. If a dedicated Windows Live Hotmail app for the iPhone or iPod touch makes you happy, take a look at mBox Mail.
Access Free Windows Live Hotmail in iPhone Mail Via IMAP (Requires IzyMail Subscription)
To add a Windows Live Hotmail account to iPhone Mail using IzyMail and IMAP access — which gives you seamless access to all folders:
